Violinstory 1 자막
Harmonics Practice and comprehensive
Intonation application
-Augmented, Diminished, intervals

A string rings 440 times per second of the sound which produce this A sound,
Amazingly it is A out of ABCD.

All of us,  everybody , including you and I, when we were being born, the A was there….. when a child is crying out, it makes with A sound.

At the New York airport ………A ‘just born baby’ was crying with the A sound accurately.

정확하게 A에요. 그런데
The whining sounds, just few weeks old baby, cried out with the accurate A sound, like  “A...A...A…”   and…but,

When we die,  we sleep…in the movie, in United States, it indicates with the Z shape for sleeping.      We live with the ABCD, until the Z ….we live and we die.
For “A” sound, it rings 440 times per second in international standard.

If you indicate the middle part of the string rings 440, it moves twice more quickly….Understand?

Then, this sound moves 880 times?   Then how many times is this one moving?

880 times 2……….fast fast

760…then this one?   …about close to 4000 times?

Next this one?   Can you hear it? No?

We really can not listen to the sound of 8000…but we almost could listen to the 4000 one easy…next…

What is this one?

Little higher?

Si,  Do,  Do sharp,  Re, and  Re sharp,  Mi,

F  F sharp,  Sol, Sol sharp.

Hear it?  You hear it with comin up?

Hear it?   Can you or not?   Who can not?

At first,  you just say it…”What is this?”...but you do it by step by step…. Who can not follow?

So, our ears can be deceived.

Who can hear the air conditioner?

Anyone before 5 seconds ago?

Oh, what a concentration you have… just listening to both, air con sound and Dr. Bai’s lecture…^^  Ha ha ha

We listen to a sermon at a church, although a priest would shout out with the holy spirit and hitting the desk loudly…but many of you would nod and sleep…  “alright,  alright, you are right”….

Including Elders…  That is you don’t listen when you do not concentrate.

When you listen, you can hear a small sound.

When we study, 10 hours of nodding does not make any progress. But, one or two hours will make big difference of study and practice.

That is why I tell you, you have to use brain… to study and to perform.

Then,  the opposite, apart from the 440, how many times does this one move?

440 divided by 2…………220,  Then,

How about this one?  Calculate accurately it is about 200.

Ok, 200, How about this one?  400?  What?  800.

How many? 1600.   What?    It sounds?

I could make it but I will not make it.

So, actually, it is a scientific fact that there are limitless number of octaves in one string.

The bow shooting….to running rabbit….the arrow was being shot to the rabbit.
But objectively the arrow will not hit.  Right?

So, people get deceived by ears, eyes when they listen to the music, see the paintings, watch the movies.

Now, we have found the accurate theory.  If the half of the string, it will multiply the pich…and one can listen about 4 octaves on a string.  Understand?

Who saw my web site?  The harmonics theory…it is all there explained.  That was done 10 years ago.

It was done with no audience…with home video camera…it was uncomfortable.

But, now because of you, it is a lot easier and more interesting to give lecture.

So, it is the use of harmonics that can produce the most accurate intonation.

It is the reason that Jasha Heifetz is so perfect that he always uses harmonics at the high position which only he knows.

So, if you see his fingerings, there are many harmonics.

But in spite of everything, people still can not perform harmonics well.

Because, the harmonics will not sound if you just lift the finger. Do you know why?

Ok, Just do it ones.

So, press it right there.
Oh……So, Sol sound is not there
….What is the reason?

We have to have mutual conversation…the Reason....Who knows it?

Because, every finger is too thick…
We say… something of you is tick…HHH

The finger is too thick and the end of the finger is the point that makes the sound.  Right?

So, where does it make the harmonics sound?
Right here, just under the finger, that is so soft part.

That is where the harmonics sound is being produced.
Oh, then, that is how to do it?  Harmonics has to be like this.

By the way, you know any body doing like this?
With the pointy finger tip?

Everyone lets finger strait?

The reason is unconsciously people do that and even teachers tell them. In fact, you have to touch very lightly to make harmonics sound.

It responds much faster if you touch the soft part rather then touching the hard part.

So, you have to strait the finger for harmonics sound.
High position also….even low position…and artificial harmonics too….oh,… now understand?

Harmonics, on a piece… this kind of sound happens….Any kind of harmonics must be played with the soft part of the finger in order to make good sound.

Now, harmonics is well known.…so, 2/1 of a string is sounding one octave higher……right?

So, 3/1 of a string is where?
I want to know the children’s calculation…3/1 of a string is how?

So, just look at it and touch the 3/1 of the string.
OK to use the thumb …any fingering is fine…just touch the 3/1 part.

Who has the answer?  Hurry Hurry…

You may cheat or little plugging is fine…What is it?

Solfege?

Oh…Plug it to see it…

Oh…..Re…it soulds…Right?
It is perfect 5th higher Re.

“Right…but, I can not believe it unless I measure it with ruler.
I think Dr. Bai is not telling the truth…so, I can’t believe it.”

Then, I will prove it fast scientifically.

Put Re with your 1st finger…all of you.

This you can do it easily?

OK…Re is sustained and then, just stretch the 4th finger…get the harmonics with the finger.

OK….With sustained Re, Look… Take off the violin with care…don’t drop the bow…Oh… it is 1/3.

Anybody suspicious, you can measure it…..so, it is accurately 1/3.

Oh, and then, we have 1/2, also it can be 1/4…See? 1/4, 1/8……by the way, there is 1/3, it also can be 1/6?

Ok…le’s try c Do.

In fact, it is until Si…ist’t it? Because Do is same as Do.
7 of them …they are mathematically found as harmonics.

1/2, 1/4,…..1/3, 1/6/…so, what else are missing?

So, …among Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si,…

1/5  and  1/7?

Oh,……how quite?…nobody moves?….HHHH
Look, let’s find them.

This one, OK?  This one,  Right?
Look, …..Oh…1/4 …this was found before but also it can be found here as same effect.

So, now 1/4 is…..Just try it…

Which note is it?
Isn’t it Do?   Do…. Do place…
OK?......A moment ago, Re…Right?
We made it up to here….Let’s do it for fun…

4, 2, 1…so, it is this one if you use regular finger action.
This finger has to be straight if possible…

Do it….for fun….Isn’t it interesting?

Oh, Already, we are making a nice harmony….sounds good.
This is called ‘Overtone’…. ‘Overtone’…There are 16 of them in factual science.

Piano is here….   The lowest Do is….

Turn off the fan…. Imagine there is no noise…
If hit?...and listen?....at least? …this one….and this one…up to this one…can be heard.

Listen very carefully.

Find this one.
Ignore that sound…
This sound…can be the overtone…so, the over tone is very low one…the lowest Do…a human can listen up to 5 overtones.

You may listen to the overtones 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/6…but there are 16 scientific overtones….Do Do Do Sol Do Mi So Do Re Mi Fa So La Si Si Do. ….16….This can be found.

If you have the text book….Overtone…Look it up.

Look at the dictionary …for harmonics(overtone)…so, Korean English dictionary or English Korean dictionary.

If you look…Overtone can be found as harmonics.
Or Harmonics can be found as overtone.

So, harmonics can be found in music dictionary with the ‘16 kinds’ of overtones.

That is how we can develop the perfect intonation as Jascha Heifetz’s his great perfection.

We have now…1/4 done…

So, let’s find 1/6…Where do you think it is?

Let’s test it….This was 1/3 before?

Find it with your eyes where the half of that is.

So, this sound is the one.

This is the right one?

Who has found it?….Hand…raise it….now here….Who’s got this?
Who has it?...If you have found it here, also you can find it at bottom too.
If it is hard to find it here….  Do it like this……so,

Understand?
Don’t Understand?

You should know that …at the bottom part, it is little hard to find, but it will eventually come out 1/6.
So, Si will sound between 1/4 and 1/6.  That is 1/5
Then, what is left?  1 to 6 is done….7 is left.

Next, 8 is the same…Let’s find 7.  Where do you think it is?

Next…just let it down…. Oh…here is hard….let’s come up.

Next……Find this one…….F

Oh…Everyone found that….F…you found it?

Then, let’s find it at the bottom…

Now, F sound is every where, so many of you found it. Right?

Now, OK…so, that F…..from that F, just move down little bit more, there will be the Sol sound…  That is finally 1/8….the Sol sound is there.

Let’s make the Sol.

And next…

If you don’t believe it,  just measure it with the ruler, it will make sure the length with your eyes.

I uploaded on internet a long time ago…almost nobody have seen it except some Korean people.

By the way, we have to understand that ‘do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si, do’ is the mathematic.
In fact, we continuously cut the string to produce the sound.

The sound which was calculated in numbers are heard as octave, as well as 5th, 3rd in harmonies from the overtone.

Then, do you believe there is a overtone in between 1/2 and 1/3?

Do you?

That is called dissonant. …Dissonant

Oh…and we have chromatic…it is called…
‘Chromatic scale’ is … there are 12 of them in one octave.  Half steps.

If we exactly cut in half ‘the 12 chromatics’…where do you think it would be?

Try it.

12 divided by 2 equals?   6

Find the 6th one please.  What is it?  Which one?

Do, Do#, Re, Re#, Mi, Fa, Fa#.....Right?

F#  and  Do  is?

Harmony or dissonant?

Dissonant.

What kind?

Augmented 4th or Diminished 5th.

In fact, it is very easy to do it on violin.

Piano is kind hard….but….Violin is so easy to do it….The fingers are crossed…uh…so, any note is fine…If this is Do…

Try it…….Sound is easy…

Easy…..So, look…
Octave..right?
Dissonant….OK..let’s try it.

3 and 2… Try it as fingers crossed.

The 3rd finger and 1st finger…they are octave related. right?

But 2nd finger and 3rd finger…they are dissonant and also 2nd and 1st..they are dissonant.

OK…This one…I will change the fingering....Use 4th finger.

And the one we just did…use 3 and 2.

OK…here…put the 1st finger in there.
We have two octaves..right?

OK…How about the hand shape?.....Feel comfortable?

Little?   Right?

4 and 2…they are octave……3 and 1…they are octave…

Right?

OK?  This shape is what? What kind shape is this?

As if a fan with up side down and being twisted…and fully opened shape for our dancing event…right?

This time, let’s do the other way…we…F place on G string is what?

F# will be A…..right?

And then, all the half steps are ready to be sounded…what is happening?

(more horrible sounds)
OK?  Try it…

OK….Then,
Let’s try.

So, I call it ‘X box’….as if it is a box shape…and it is the smallest ‘X box’…

Diagonal line…

Using half steps…

OK…

Now, when we look for a Apartment…we see a ‘Model House’…right?

It looks so nice to see the model house…on the table as if it is a real building or something.

This is a smallest ‘Model House’ of the ‘X box’

Every note is half step apart…so it is easy.. isn’t it?

I will do an adventure……Every note is not half step, but whole step….Oh….the ‘X box’ is getting larger.

In that case….

This is happening?

All the fingers are little stretched….aren’t they?

Let’s try it…

Now, you feel the distant…right?.....note to note…it is whole step.

Anyone in trouble?  This is called ‘diatonic scale’…also called as ‘whole tone scale’.

La, Si, Do#....Re#?   Do#  Re#?

La, Si, Do#, Re#?  Right?

Let’s see what happen if we make this into the ‘X box’ shape…and what notes…

Which harmony?  Perfect 4th related…right?
Try it…  Keep the fingers down…
Really nice sound…right?
This X is done…so, let’s try the other X.

OK….This was easy before….wasn’t it?
Each half step….this is easy for everyone….now is little apart…isn’t it?

Next…

It is very difficult to connect…….let’s try it…
Connect the X…like this X….this way…

Oh…I am perfect……Stand up…who?

Who will show and challenge Dr. Bai’s techniqure…
Please just stand up and demonstrate…..who?

Yu Kum Jong?

You are still a student….show us…

Do is little flat…. little bit more higher….

Little more louder…louder…

It is so hard to do….

The 4th finger on E string is….

Now little better…For accurate intonation, try the 4th finger… relaxed….then….Do….the Do natural….

OK……a lot better…….Who else?

Here sisters?  From Pusan…….Let’s try…

Just do it……..This is hard…isn’t it?....Why is it hard?  This?

The Perfect 4th is very difficult …because….Perfect 5th, Perfect 4th, Octave…these 3 intervals must be so perfect for our ears, but otherwise it is so painful to hear…that’s why.

We call this a ‘gray’ …for nothing special…which is not a color… That’s why it is ‘gray’

For that reason, any color…any similar color…in Korean, it is so amazing to say it…

Bluish… or Yellowish….it does not mean it is yellow but it is in that category.

Gray with such word….in Korean….which means we call it with strong gray or light gray….but never call it ‘grayish’.

So, we don’t call it ‘Perfetish’…nor ‘Perfectish intonation’

Pass…or  Not Pass……it is like that…
Or I think it is almost pass….if that case….it seems “Not Pass”

That’s why we have to make it perfect with our intonation…so,

6th …can be adjusted little bit…but Perfect 4th has to be perfect.

So, now you need to work little more on the perfect 4th…right?

6th is also same…so, now we are at which position?

The 1st postion…..

We are not even quite sure of the 1st position’s intonation.

Isn’t it hard?

We just proved that the 1st position is not that easy to master…right?

The 1st position’s half step and whole step…these are not that easy to move around.

Oh…then, Sir,….Violin is hard….even more difficult with higher position then the 1st position?....But..

In fact, the high position should be easier in theory.

But why many people are having problems in high position?

What?  Please speak louder…

In scale practice, scientifically the 1st position has certain setup…for me….I always do practice all positions with same concept.

Let’s not stop here…. we must make sure until here.

Let’s try it…

Here…next half step up…and the half step up…

How is it?  Confused?

4 at the same time is hard…..in that case, let’s cut…just try one…just this one….

OK….next one….let’s try…

OK…next…we have to master that including the 4th finger…like that…so, you can make a simple exercise.

So, Violin Exercise is not necessarily looking at the text book.

You may invent your own interesting exercises that you can enjoy.

All practice should be enjoyable with fun, not force.

You have to create new exercises, not following and imitating the text book.
It is useful to find new ideas of that exercise and develop for your own good and others.

I gave you one…..so, make it ten…..Can you?

Also not only that, you can expand it…

Now, I showed you little two ‘X box’s.

I will show you a ‘big one’.

Every note was either half or whole step…but this one is ‘octave’….I will show you now…

Octave?  No way….by the way….X box…this may be possible?

Octave…between the fingers….yesterday, I showed you with the viola….right?

If I do it other way…What note is it?........let’s calculate.

If I do it on G string, what note is it…..If I move to G string?

이건…
This is….Do, isn’t it?

Then, if I move it to E string, what note is it?

This note?

With this, I hold F note…what are they in between?

This is the Biggest ‘X box’

Do, Re, Mi, F#.

What are they?

Diatonic scale…isn’t it?  This is a whole tone scale.

I do a lot of stretch and put the fingers down like this up to here …the 1st finger is almost straight.

Almost as if I use a synthesizer effect for a fast passages.

How did I do this?

I use a bow to make a diatonic scale…then how big is this X box?

To here Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si …diatonic scale comes out…
To here …octave, 4 octave sound, comes out… you see?

Next, These are in 5th’s.

Understand?

Then, this way is not yet sound….

This we did, This we did, This we don’t need to do, because they are in 5th’s

What is this distant wise?

I will show you…

This note will come out.

Then this arpeggio is done easily ….like this….This should be easy to do if you put the thumb here.

Then the 1st finger is almost straight…so,

It is a lot of stretching situation.

This is the ‘X box’’s ultimate largest….that is my concept.

I made this as a Quiz ….but you don’t quite understand it.

But, I made a small ‘X box’ with half and whole relationship……What are they in between larger then whole step?
So, half step is 1….whole step is 2…..What is 3?

It is Minor 3rd.

So, I will show you the minor 3rd.

Ok…let’s build the minor 3rd.

So, what is it? This one…. you know it is quite familiar tune….so,

I actually do it quite comfortably …I do the stretch.
It is a risk…but let’s try it…all of you.

What is the harmony of this ‘X box’ from G string to E string? What is it?

In Music theory,  not minor 3rd, Major 3rd…  It is Major 3rd
But, with finger distant it is 3..distant. …so, half is 1, whole is 2, this one is 3…
But, harmonically …this one is….Major 3rd.

Then,  here….Let’s try it....although it’s very hard.

So, by this time, your fingers feel convulsive, cramp?
So, let’s finish this…now, the other diagonal line ‘X box’…what is the harmony?

It is this one.

What is this harmonically?

It is minor 7th, minor 7th so,

So, do you see the image?

The finger distant is 3 each.

The fingering is not comfortable.

If you feel comfortable with this one, you have reached the Virtuoso level.
We did this exercise before?

And next…

If you can do this, you are mastered under very flexible hand and accurate intonation.

You begin to build up the ‘X box’ like this.

So, we did the one before and the largest ‘X box’…but there is one more between these two. What is it?

It means we step up from 3 to 4.

The finger distant is 2 whole steps.

Here Try it…

OK….and then, what is the interval at this side of diagonal?

It is Minor 3rd.

So…

If you can handle this, you are really flexible…

Look at my thumb…

I know you feel really deserted…almost facing the life or death situation with this kind of finger stretch…
You can not comprehend it at all.

So, now…let’s try out the other diagonal line for actual completion.

So, this was the harmony if we do it here?

What do you call it?

Major 7th….Just half step down from Octave is the Major 7th.

Then, 2nd finger and 3rd finger are what kind relationship?
This sound it the one…

So, when you come up here, what is it?

F sharp……….This really need perseverance…..Try it…
Not 4…but at least 3 fingers are needed…Understand?

OK…….So, the ‘X box’ is now complete.

Before, I showed you the big ‘X box’, now we just reviewed a half step less, which means the Major 7th.

With…minor 7th, Major 3rd, minor 3rd, whole tone scale, and the half tone…. so, now we’ve done the brick building.

In fact, the finger board shape is…

What kind of shape is it?  Are 4 strings evenly placed or like this kind of shape?

Why is it shaped like this?

Because,  instrument makers have researched years and years for this shape.

For Guitar is different…almost it is like this shape, it is called ‘fret’ to produce comfortable notes …like our ‘nut’ effect…

So, since because we don’t have the ‘nut’(fret), we have to use the fingers.

Let’s imagine it…as if we play the Guitar.

Normally, don’t they have fingers like this?

Have you seen them? Their finger action….They do like this.

Have you seen the Cellist action?

They do the fingers like this.

Do you know why the cellist do the fingers like this?

If they don’t, it is impossible to play…

Compare to them….we are too spoiled … too much in comfort zone.
We only move around with position after positions.

So, let’s measure the distant from E to G string.

From E to G string…… About 1.5 cm

Right?  From E to G string

Just move it to the bridge area….then where is it on the bridge?

It is right on the half in between 2nd and 3rd strings.

Then what does it mean?

The width has become twice wider……right?

As it is twice wider, we did the octave on the string…
Have we proved that ‘octave’ means a half length of the string?

But unfortunately the neighbor string is twice wider as it becomes shorter.
The finger is falling in?  If we do it with 5th….

So, let’s test ourselves…let’s try that.

This is coming up octave higher…

What kind of effect is it?  When we sing…..Ah…Ah…..my voice…Hhh

We can slide up one octave?   Ah…Ah….Ah….The slide effect is coming from the string.

It is very possible…..
Because,  the notes in between 1/2 and 1/3 are produced by the overtone effect.

In fact, there are 12 half tones.

In between 12 of them, including even the dissonant intervals…we are deceived by the ears….as we may say it.

That’s why the vocalist do the exercises when they get up in the morning…..like this….I’m not quite sure how…but…from the lowest note to highest note…they do the slide exercise a lot….Ah…Ah…up to the top.

We have to do the exercise like that……in the mornig.

Do this exercise every morning….then your ears are trained.

And… Do you feel that the finger tip has become larger? Keep falling again….

So, Are you afraid to do in higher position or not?

No more.

Your neighbors are not anymore strangers…..Apt living is bad for all of us…as we have been ignoring the neighbors….

But have them closer….This is not that difficult exercise…

Shall we try the sound?

OK…..This is called shifting.  As you know.

It is called shifting…and the famous Dorothy Delay once said..
“This might be the secret of Paganini…”….might be… she even… was not sure.

I am not sure either, but…shifting is there in every note.

Well, a Piano is a percussion …not a string instrument.

So, unfortunately it can not produce the shifting sound….right?

No…. but, the most similar instrument for voice is the ‘string’ instrument.

Double Bass, Cello, Viola, Violin…..all these are able to use the ‘shifting’….for most humanly voice as possible.

And to make it musical, it is possible to use the shifting for actual exaggeration for better phrase in romantic music.
….in fact, we plan that technique as we make it musical with calculation using our brain…..Shifting.

Shifting exercise is very helpful if we do it everyday for our musicianship.

56/22…………………58/07

Now, the next step is………with calculation of 12

Let’s try it……..4 in one group.

Then finally what is going on?

“Oh…I can not do it anymore…I am confused…what is this half tone stuff…or dissonant…. what? I only hear a noise….” You may feel like this.

Because half tone scale is the most difficult intonation to listen…you may think…it is easy to move octave with next half step up like that for 12 times…..But is it easy to find?

As I said before, octave is getting shorter in 1/2.

So, here at the bottom… the distant…..1st and 2nd is becoming 1/2 from the bottom one.

58/07…………………chapter 2…1

1  then when we come up 2…becomes narrower…in fact,
We don’t calculate the math, but rather we go by the feelings.

With ears….

So, the world is like this……the politic is feeling, the business is feeling, the education is feeling.

My performance is feeling, and the culture is also feeling.
If men do not have feeling, there is no business, no politic, no feeling for anyone.

Chapter 2………
Chromatic Scale(반음계)의 이해와 Octave Shifting

Performance Practice and Prepare
Semitone and Chromatics Octave Shifting

Today, I will talk about something easy to understand for everyone.…not like Major 3rd, or minor 3rd stuff.

As you say, “we learn everything from the kindergarten”, I will try to start the first step.

First day, I showed you this rubbing alcohol…this is about 1 $ at the drug store…for cleaning…also for getting shot from a nurse…so,

This is a dangerous stuff for little children…they need a help….As we see there is a dirt on the tissue paper. It needs a washing face…which has a system.

Never touch the body of violin.  That’s why you always have to tilt the violin and rub here…this area…for better view.

And next, the finger tips….or here, this is an ebony which is originally black color.

And here is also fine….always clean everywhere except the main body, and turn the body and clean this area where your fingers touch.

Then, it is completely clean. ….washing face.

1/45………………2/45

And if you can not quite reach this area, and you wonder how to clean,…you may use a professional cleaning liquid.
But, it smells little….so, someone told me this method…you can use a fine quality silk cloth or material. Buy a best quality silk cloth piece from a flea market or something, and just rob it a lot…then it makes an electricity.

Then the dirt will be removed. ….so, the rosin will be gone…then the body will be shiny shine.

So, in fact, it is much better way of natural treatment…although it takes a little time.

Especially, if it is an old instrument.

So, you wash the face and next, before you practice, the very first thing to make sure is not the tuning but …. check the bridge like this.

If you see the bridge….it stands like this.

2/45…………………4/12…………..5/47

Look at it…all of you……this bridge has to stand like this 90 degree…and there is a way.

If you look at the bridge, the place is here and it is cut like this.

This is not cut properly like this, but it is little bit cut this kind shape.

So, then, how do we follow the line….? Because there is always the ‘string tension’ .. it is at least 25 kg.

This 25 kg of the string tension is so hard to sustain, so, there is a sound post and the base bar under the inside.

To protect the wood and to support the tension…

So, this first side…not the back side but the front…is the line has to be 90 degree to place it.

People usually people don’t care the angle…so it is often tilting forward.

Especially, little students don’t’ care at all, so, when it falls down, it damages the violin and stuff.

Oh…then, it would be better not to move it at all…this one…is dangerous for little students….
That’s why in fact it is not sensible to go to violin shop just to fix the bridge angle……..which no one will like that at the shop.

So, if it is possible …you should learn how to do it…I’ll show you.

First sit down…and put it in between the knees……just try it.

Put the bow down somewhere….with both hands…this finger….when we play violin…it is the 3rd fingering….put this and hold it here as a paper clip.

Hold it like this and with rest of the fingers, hold the under part with 1st string and 4th string.

With this, hold the index fingers, hold the top strings overlap the bridge.

And look here…the thumbs are here…with the thumbs…here… Do you see the 3… train tracks?

The 1st train tack and the 3rd train track….with the index fingers are placed…Hold the thumbs and index fingers.

And then, carefully …pull it….little by little.

Inward way… don’t pull it backward suddenly…and if it is too much forward, just pull it little bit.

So, by doing this, find it if it is 90 degree or not.

5/47…………………….6/37………….9/52

Oh…don’t’ loose the pegs at all….

If it is too loose….it’s dangerous, it might fall back.

Anyone difficult to do it?

Everybody has at least that much strength.

So, make sure of it.
And next step,.....is to look up the instrument.

The Bow….Bow inspection…..we tighten this much.

Some people ask me “how much is right amount of tightening?”….in fact, if the bow is strong…you should not tighten it too much…also, if the bow is weak…you should tighten it more.

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter…..A long time ago, I have published a series of an article at Sae Kyang Publisher…..It was the time I just came to Korea, in 1989, I wrote that every 3 months…and that is the foundation of my web site.

I was young and new surrounding in Korea. I was quite lazy to write the article naturally.

If the dead line was next Monday…I was starting to write on Saturday…3 days before.

So, I used to write the article in 2 days…without proofreading or correction, I just wrote it.

And just I sent them….They did the correction.

The important point was, the contents….that was my main thing
..so, I did not care the grammar nor the spellings….because they do the job…But it came out very well.

So, if anything….if you have any idea or main idea, just write it.

I don’t’ know the grammar well yet.

I have no idea what is the correct way, but I collect the material...
You have participate only 1/5…at the website board.

You…are about 40 of you…from now on I will call you attendance and those of you who would come late will be somehow taken care of something.

So, write something and be on time…right on time…

5 minutes to… is preferable.

Be ready…so, you will be used by God.

The food container has to be clean to be used…
If it is not clean, you would not eat 2-3 times from that.

You must wash it……you also have to clean the instrument as you clean your mind.

Back to ‘remembering’..there are 2 kinds of remembering.

If there is very very shocking thing, even people force you saying, “forget it, forget it”….but still you will never forget that.

But you see so many faces….in the subway, in the bus, on the street…How can you remember so many faces?

My weak point is that I am not good at remembering people’s names.

But if I meet the person often and talking to each other….it is natural to remember the name.

That is the remembering technique by repetition.

So, there are ‘remembering by impact’ and ‘remembering by repetition’…..so, the violin technique is the same of these two.

‘Some technique’ is one day observed by a shock…

Like this kind technique… springing, or Staccato, …..like this kind special technique comes to you suddenly one day…Then you’ll never forget it.

9/52…………………..11/22

You can not lose it.  You don’t forget it.

But there is ‘some technique’ you may lose it.

Intonation….and you don’t remember a concerto which you did 10 years ago.

Music…. You have to re-learn it….Learn it again and again.

This is God’s law.

If you fast for 3 days, you lose a lot of your weight.

And the world is not your concern…but the food.

Oh, I can’t eat this tasteful food now……..but I did 3 days fasting…for 4 times.

By the way, for 3 times…I only had the thoughts of the food….but the last one out of 12th days….on the 3rd day of the 3rd time….At that time…I did not think the food at all.

Instead of the food, I had an idea.

A technique idea……..that was not my idea but it was from God…I was quite

A string that rings 440 times per second produces this 'A'
Dr. Bai
Dr. Bai
A string that rings 440 times per second produces this 'A' sound,

Amazingly it is an 'A' out of ABCD.

All of us, including you and I, when we were born, the sound of ‘A’ was there.

When a child cries, it cries with an ‘A’ sound.

At a New York airport, a ‘just born baby’ was crying with the ‘A’ sound accurately.

The whining sounds of just few weeks old baby, cried out with the accurate ‘A’ sound, like “A...A...A…”

When we die, we sleep.

In the movie, in United States, it indicates sleeping with the ‘Z’ shape.

We live with the ABCD, until the ‘Z’. We live and we die.

For ‘A’ sound, it rings 440 times per second in international standard.

If you indicate the middle part of the string that rings 440, it moves twice as quickly. Understand?

Then, this sound moves 880 times?

Then how many times is this one moving?

880 times 2. Fast, fast

760, then this one? About close to 4000 times?

Next, this one? Can you hear it? No?

We really can not listen to the sound of 8000 rings but we almost could listen to the 4000 one easily.

What is this one?

A little higher?

Si, Do, Do sharp, Re, and Re sharp,
Mi, F F sharp, Sol, Sol sharp.

Hear it? You hear it with comin up?

Hear it? Can you or not? Who can not?

At first, you might say ”What is this?” but you do it by step by step.

Who can not follow?

Our ears can be deceived.

Who can hear the air conditioner?

Anyone heard it 5 seconds ago?

What a concentration you have. Just listening to both, air con sound and Dr. Bai’s lecture

When a priest shouts out with the holy spirit and slams the podium as he speaks

when we’re listening to the sermon at our church, many of you would still nod and sleep.

“Alright, alright, you are right”

Including Elders. That is, you don’t listen when you do not concentrate.

When you listen, you can even hear a very small sound.

When we study, 10 hours of nodding does not make any progress.

But, one or two hours of studyings will make a big difference in study and practice.

That is why I tell you, you have to use the brain to study and to perform.

Then, the opposite, apart from the 440, how many times does this one move?

440 divided by 2 is 220,

How about this one? It is about 200 if we calculate it accurately.

Ok, 200, How about this one? 400? What? 800.

How many? 1600. What? It sounds?

I could make it but I will not make it.

So, actually, it is a scientific fact that there are limitless number of octaves in one string.

The bow shooting at a running rabbit. The arrow was being shot at the rabbit.

But objectively the arrow will not hit. Right?

So, people get deceived by ears, eyes when they listen to the music, see the paintings, watch the movies.

Now, we have found the accurate theory.

If it’s half of the string, it will multiply the pitch and one can listen about 4 octaves on a string. Understand?

Who saw my website? The harmonics theory, it’s all there explained. That was done 10 years ago.

It was done with no audience with home video camera. It was very uncomfortable.

But, now because of you, it is a lot easier and more interesting to give the lecture.

So, it is the use of harmonics that can produce the most accurate intonation.

It is the reason that Jasha Heifetz is so perfect that he always uses harmonics at the high position which only he knows.

If you see his fingerings, there are many harmonics.

But in spite of everything, people still can not perform harmonics well.

However, the harmonics will not sound if you just lift the finger.

Do you know why?

Ok, let's try it once.

Press it right there.

Sol sound is not there

What is the reason?

We have to have mutual conversation.

Who knows the reason?

Because, every finger is too thick.

We say, something of yours is thick

The finger is too thick and the end of the finger is the point that makes the sound. Right?

Where does it make the harmonics sound?

Right here, just under the finger, that is the soft part.

That is where the harmonics sound is being produced.

Then, that is how to do it? Harmonics has to be like this.

By the way, you know anybody doing like this?

With the pointy finger tip?

Everyone spread their fingers straight.

The reason is people unconsciously do that and even teachers tell them.

In fact, you have to touch very lightly to make harmonics sound.

It responds much faster if you touch the soft part rather then touching the hard part.

So, you have to spread the fingers straight for harmonics sound.

High position also. Even low position and artificial harmonics, too.

Now understand?

Harmonics, on a piece. This kind of sound happens.

Any kind of harmonics must be played with the soft part of the finger in order to make a good sound.

Now, harmonics is well known.

So 1/2 of a string is sounding one octave higher, right?

Now, 1/3 of a string is where?

I want to know the children’s calculation. 1/3 of a string is how?

So, just look at it and touch the 1/3 of the string.

OK to use the thumb. Any fingering is fine. Just touch the 1/3 part.

Who has the answer? Quick

You may cheat or little plugging is fine.

What is it?

Solfege?

Plug it to see it.

Re, it sounds right?

It is perfect 5th higher Re.

Right but I can not believe it unless I measure it with ruler.

I think Dr. Bai is not telling the truth so I can’t believe it.

Then, I will prove it fast scientifically.

Put Re with your 1st finger, all of you.

This you can do it easily?

OK. Re is sustained and then, just stretch the 4th finger. Get the harmonics with the finger.

OK. With sustained Re,

Look. Take off the violin with care. Don’t drop the bow. It's 1/3.

Anybody suspicious, you can measure it. It is accurately 1/3.

Oh, and then, we have 1/2, also it can be 1/4.

See? 1/4, 1/8

By the way, there is 1/3, it also can be 1/6?

Ok. Let’s try C Do.

In fact, it is until Si…ist’t it? Because Do is same as Do.

7 of them. They are mathematically found as harmonics.

1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/6... What else are missing?

Among Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si,

1/5 and 1/7?

How quite? Nobody moves?

Look, let’s find them.

This one, OK? This one, right?

Look. 1/4. This was found before but it can also be found here as the same effect.

So, now 1/4 is. Just try it.

Which note is it?

Isn’t it Do? Do. Do place.

OK? A moment ago, Re. Right?

We made it up to here. Let’s do it for fun.

4, 2, 1. It is this one if you use regular finger action.

This finger has to be straight if possible.

Do it for fun. Isn’t it interesting?

Oh, Already, we are making a nice harmony….sounds good.

This is called ‘Overtone’.

There are 16 of 'Overtone' in factual science.

Piano is here. The lowest Do is.

Turn off the fan. Imagine there is no noise.

If hit? and listen? at least? This one and this one up to this one can be heard.

Listen very carefully.

Find this one.

Ignore that sound.

This sound can be the overtone. The over tone is a very low one, the lowest Do.

A human can listen up to 5 overtones.

You may listen to the overtones 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/6 but there are 16 scientific overtones.

Do Do Do Sol Do Mi So Do Re Mi Fa So La Si Si Do.

16. This can be found.

If you have the text book….Overtone…Look it up.

Look at the dictionary for harmonics(overtone)

Korean English dictionary or English Korean dictionary.

If you look, Overtone can be found as harmonics.

Or Harmonics can be found as overtone.

Harmonics can be found in music dictionary with the ‘16 kinds’ of overtones.

That is how we can develop the perfect intonation as Jascha Heifetz’s his great perfection.

We have now 1/4 done.

So, let’s find 1/6. Where do you think it is?

Let’s test it. This was 1/3 before?

Find it with your eyes where the half of that is.

So, this sound is the one.

This is the right one?

Who has found it? Raise your hand. Now here, who’s got this?

Who has it?

If you have found it here, also you can find it at the bottom too.

If it is hard to find it here. Do it like this.

Understand?

Don’t Understand?

You should know that at the bottom part, it is a little hard to find,

but it will eventually come out as 1/6.

So, Si will sound between 1/4 and 1/6. That is 1/5

Then, what is left? 1 to 6 is done….7 is left.

Next, 8 is the same…Let’s find 7. Where do you think it is?

Next, just let it down. Oh, here, it’s hard. Let’s come up.

Next, find this one. F.

Everyone found that. F, you found it?

Then, let’s find it at the bottom.

Now, F sound is every where, so many of you found it. Right?

Now, That F.

From that F, just move down little bit more, there will be the 'Sol' sound…

That is finally 1/8. The 'Sol' sound is there.

Let’s make 'Sol'.

And next

If you don’t believe it, just measure it with the ruler.

You can confirm the length with your eyes.

I uploaded this on the internet a long time ago.

Almost nobody has seen it except some Korean people.

By the way, we have to understand that ‘do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si, do’ is the mathematic.

In fact, we continuously cut the string to produce the sound.

The sound which was calculated in numbers is heard as octave, as well as 5th, 3rd in harmonies from the overtone.

Then, do you believe there is a overtone in between 1/2 and 1/3?

Do you?

That is called 'dissonant'. Dissonant.

We have chromatic, it is called.

‘Chromatic scale’. There are 12 of them in one octave. Half steps.

If we exactly cut in half ‘the 12 chromatics’, where do you think it would be?

Try it.

12 divided by 2 equals? Six

Find the 6th one please. What is it? Which one?

Do, Do#, Re, Re#, Mi, Fa, Fa#.....Right?

F# and Do is?

Harmony or dissonant?

Dissonant.

What kind?

Augmented 4th or Diminished 5th.

In fact, it is very easy to do it on violin.

Piano is kind of hard but Violin is so easy to do it.

The fingers are crossed so any note is fine. If this is Do

Try it. Sound is easy.

Easy. Look

Octave. Right?

Dissonant. OK, let’s try it.

3 and 2. Try it as fingers crossed.

The 3rd finger and 1st finger, they are octave related. Right?

But 2nd finger and 3rd finger, they are dissonant and also 2nd and 1st, they are dissonant.

This one, I will change the fingering. Use 4th finger.

And the one we just did use 3 and 2.

Here. Put the 1st finger in there.

We have two octaves, right?

How about the hand shape? Feel comfortable?

Little? Right?

4 and 2, they are octave. 3 and 1, they are octave.

Right?

OK? This shape is what? What kind shape is this?

It looks like a fan tilted upside down and twisted and fully opened shape at our dancing event, right?

This time, let’s do the other way. F place on G string is what?

F# will be A. Right?

And then, all the half steps are ready to be sounded. What is happening?

OK? Try it.

OK. Then,

Let’s try.

So, I call it ‘X box’….as if it is a box shape…and it is the smallest ‘X box’

Diagonal line

Using half steps

OK

Now, when we look for an Apartment, we look at a ‘Model House’. Right?

It looks so nice to see the model house on the table as if it is a real building or something.

This is a smallest ‘Model House’ of the ‘X box’

Every note is half step apart…so it is easy. Isn’t it?

I will do an adventure.

Every note is not a half step, but a whole step….Oh….the ‘X box’ is getting larger.

In that case,

This is happening?

All the fingers are little stretched. Aren’t they?

Let’s try it

Now, you feel the distance, right? Note to note, it is a whole step.

Anyone in trouble? This is called ‘diatonic scale’, also called as ‘whole tone scale’.

La, Si, Do#....Re#? Do# Re#?

La, Si, Do#, Re#? Right?

Let’s see what happens if we make this into the ‘X box’ shape and what notes

Which harmony? Perfect 4th related…right?

Try it. Keep the fingers down.

Really nice sound, right?

This X is done. Let’s try the other X.

This was easy before. Wasn’t it?

Each half step. This is easy for everyone.

Now, it's a little apart. Isn’t it?

Next

It is very difficult to connect. Let’s try it

Connect the X like this X. This way...

Oh, I am perfect. Stand up, who?

Who will show and challenge Dr. Bai’s technique.

Please just stand up and demonstrate. Who?

Yu Kum Jong?

You are still a student….show us…

Do is little flat. A little bit more higher….

Little more louder, louder

It is so hard to do….

The 4th finger on E string is….

Now little better…

For accurate intonation, try the 4th finger.

Relaxed. Then, Do, the Do natural.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
OK, a lot better. Who else?

Here sisters? From Pusan…….Let’s try…

Just do it……..This is hard…isn’t it?....Why is it hard? This?

The Perfect 4th is very difficult because Perfect 5th, Perfect 4th, Octave…these 3 intervals must be so perfect for our ears.

Otherwise it is so painful to hear.

We call this a ‘gray’ for nothing special which is not a color. That’s why it is ‘gray’

For that reason, any color, any similar color in Korean, it is so amazing to say it.

Bluish or Yellowish. It does not mean it is yellow but it is in that category.

Gray with such word in Korean which means we call it with strong gray

or light gray but never call it ‘grayish’.

So, we don’t call it ‘Perfetish’ nor ‘Perfectish intonation’

Pass or Not Pass, it is like that.

Or I think it is almost pass. If it’s that case, it seems “Not Pass”.

That’s why we have to make it perfect with our intonation…so,

6th …can be adjusted little bit…but Perfect 4th has to be perfect.

So, now you need to work a little more on the perfect 4th…right?

6th is also same…so, now we are at which position?

The 1st position.

In scale practice, scientifically the 1st position has certain setup for me.

I always do practice all positions with same concept.

All practice should be enjoyable with fun, not forced.

You have to create new exercises, not by following and imitating the text book.

It’s useful to find new ideas of that exercise and develop for your own good and of others.

Then this arpeggio is done easily like this.

This should be easy to do if you put the thumb here.

It is a lot of stretching situation.

This is the ‘X box’s ultimate largest….that is my concept.

I made this as a quiz but you don’t quite understand it.

But, I made a small ‘X box’ with half and whole relationship.

What are they in between larger then whole step?

We did this exercise before, right?

And next…

If you can do this, you are mastered under very flexible hand and accurate intonation.

You begin to build up the ‘X box’ like this.

So, we did the one before and the largest ‘X box’ but there is one more between these two. What is it?

It means we step up from 3 to 4.

The finger distance is 2 whole steps.

Here Try it…

OK….and then, what is the interval at this side of diagonal?

It is Minor 3rd.

So…

If you can handle this, you are really flexible…

Look at my thumb…

I know you feel really deserted.

Almost facing the life or death situation with this kind of finger stretch…

You can not comprehend it at all.

So, now…let’s try out the other diagonal line for actual completion.

So, this was the harmony if we do it here?

What do you call it?

Major 7th….Just half step down from Octave is the Major 7th.

Then, 2nd finger and 3rd finger are what kind relationship?
It will be this sound, right?

So, when you come up here, what is it?

F sharp. This really need perseverance.Try it.

Not 4 but at least 3 fingers are needed. Understand?

OK. So, the ‘X box’ is now complete.

Before, I showed you the big ‘X box’, now we just reviewed a half step less, which means the Major 7th.

With…minor 7th, Major 3rd, minor 3rd, whole tone scale, and the half tone.

Now we’ve done the brick building.

In fact, the finger board shape is…

What kind of shape is it? Are 4 strings evenly placed or like this kind of shape?

Why is it shaped like this?

Because the instrument makers have researched years and years for this shape.

For Guitar, it’s different.

Almost it is like this shape, it is called ‘fret’ to produce comfortable notes, like our ‘nut’ effect…

Compare to them, we are too spoiled. Too much in comfort zone.

That’s why the vocalist do the exercises when they get up in the morning, like this.

I’m not quite sure how but from the lowest note to highest note, they do the slide exercise a lot.

Ah…Ah…up to the top.

We have to do the exercise like that in the mornig.

Do this exercise every morning, then your ears will be trained.

And… Do you feel that the finger tip has become larger? Keep falling again.

So, Are you afraid to do in higher position or not?

No more.

Your neighbors are not anymore strangers.

Apartment living is bad for all of us as we have been ignoring the neighbors.

But have them closer. This is not that difficult exercise

Shall we try the sound?

OK…..This is called shifting. As you know.

It is called shifting…and the famous Dorothy Delay once said,

“This might be the secret of Paganini” Might be. She even was not sure.

I’m not sure either, but shifting is there in every note.

In fact, we plan that technique as we make it musical with calculation using our brain.

Shifting.

Shifting exercise is very helpful if we do it everyday for our musicianship.

Now, the next step is………with calculation of 12

Let’s try it……..4 in one group.

Then finally what is going on?

“Oh…I can not do it anymore. I’m confused. What is this half tone stuff or dissonant….

What? I only hear a noise.” You may feel like this.

Because half tone scale is the most difficult intonation to listen.

You may think it’s easy to move an octave with next half step up like that for 12 times.

But is it easy to find?

As I said before, octave is getting shorter in 1/2.

So, here at the bottom… the distant…..1st and 2nd is becoming 1/2 from the bottom one.

1, then when we come up 2…becomes narrower…in fact,

We don’t calculate the math, but rather we go by the feelings.

With ears….

So, the world is like this. The politic is feeling, the business is feeling, the education is feeling.

My performance is feeling, and the culture is also feeling.

If men do not have feeling, there is no business, no politic, no feeling for anyone.

Chapter 2………
Chromatic Scale(반음계)의 이해와 Octave Shifting

Performance Practice and Prepare
Semitone and Chromatics Octave Shifting

Today, I will talk about something easy to understand for everyone. Not like Major 3rd, or minor 3rd stuff.

As one may say, “we learn everything from the kindergarten”, I will try to start the first step.

First day, I showed you this rubbing alcohol.

This is about 1 $ at the drug store for cleaning and also used before getting a shot from a nurse

This is a dangerous stuff for little children. They need help.

As we see there is a dirt on the tissue paper. It needs a washing face which has a system.

Never touch the body of the violin.

That’s why you always have to tilt the violin and rub here, this area for a better view.

And next, the finger tips or here, this is an ebony which is originally black color.

And here is also fine, always clean everywhere except the main body, and turn the body and clean this area where your fingers touch.

Then, it is completely clean. ….washing face.

And if you can not quite reach this area, and you wonder how to clean, you may use a professional cleaning liquid.

But, it smells a little. Someone told me this method. You can use a fine quality silk cloth or material.

Buy a best quality silk cloth piece from a flea market or something, and just rob it a lot. Then it makes an electricity.

Then the dirt will be removed. The rosin will be gone, then the body will be shiny shine.

So, in fact, it is much better way of natural treatment although it takes a little time.

Especially, if it’s an old instrument.

So, you wash the face and next, before you practice, the very first thing to make sure is not the tuning but check the bridge like this.

If you see the bridge….it stands like this.

2/45…………………4/12…………..5/47

Look at it…all of you……this bridge has to stand like this 90 degree…and there is a way.

If you look at the bridge, the place is here and it is cut like this.

This is not cut properly like this, but it is a little bit cut this kind shape.

So, then, how do we follow the line? Because there is always the ‘string tension’, it is at least 25 kg.

This 25 kg of the string tension is so hard to sustain. That’s why there’s a sound post and the base bar under the inside.

To protect the wood and to support the tension…

So, this first side, not the back side but the front is the line has to be 90 degree to place it.

People usually don’t care about the angle so it is often tilting forward.

Especially, little students don’t’ care at all, so, when it falls down, it damages the violin and stuff.

Then, it would be better not to move it at all…this one…is dangerous for little students….

That’s why in fact it is not sensible to go to violin shop just to fix the bridge angle which no one will like that at the shop.

So, if it is possible …you should learn how to do it…I’ll show you.

First sit down and put it between your knees. Just try it.

Put the bow down somewhere with both hands, this finger when we play violin.

It is the 3rd fingering. Put this and hold it here as a paper clip.

Hold it like this and with rest of the fingers, hold the under part with 1st string and 4th string.

With this, hold the index fingers, hold the top strings overlap the bridge.

And look here…the thumbs are here…with the thumbs…here… Do you see the 3… train tracks?

The 1st train tack and the 3rd train track with the index fingers placed. Hold the thumbs and index fingers.

And then, carefully …pull it….little by little.

Inward. Don’t pull it backward suddenly and if it is too much forward, just pull it a little bit.

So, by doing this, find it if it is 90 degree or not.

5/47…………………….6/37………….9/52

Oh…don’t’ loose the pegs at all….

If it is too loose, it’s dangerous, it might fall back.

Anyone having difficulty?

Everybody has at least that much strength.

So, make sure of it.

And the next step is to look up the instrument.

The Bow. The bow inspection, we tighten this much.

Some people ask me “how much is right amount of tightening?”

In fact, if the bow is strong, you should not tighten it too much.

If the bow is weak, you should tighten it more.

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. A long time ago, I have published a series of an article at Sae Kyang Publisher.

It was the time I just came to Korea, in 1989, I wrote that every 3 months and that is the foundation of my web site.

I was young and with new surroundings in Korea, I was quite lazy to write the articles.

If the deadline was next Monday, I was starting to write on Saturday, 3 days before the deadline.

So, I used to write the article in 2 days without proofreading or correction, I just wrote it.

And just I sent them….They did the correction.

The important point was, the contents was my main thing.

So I did not care about the grammar or the spellings because they do the job but it came out very well.

So, if you have any idea or main idea, just write it.

I don’t’ know the grammar well yet.

I have no idea what is the correct way, but I collect the materials.
Only about 1/5 of you have participated on the website board.

There are about 40 of you.

From now on, I will call an attendance and those of you who would come late will be somehow taken care of.

So, write something and be on time, right on time.

5 minutes before is preferred.

Be ready so that you can be used by God.

The food container has to be clean to be used. If it’s not clean, you would not eat 2-3 times from that bowl.

You must wash it. You also have to clean the instrument as you clean your mind.

Back to ‘remembering’, there are 2 kinds of remembering.

If there is a very very shocking event, even if people force you to forget it, you will never be able to forget.

But you see many faces in the subway, in the bus, on the street. How can you remember so many faces?

My weak point is that I am not good at remembering people’s names.

But if I meet the person often and talk to each other, it’s natural to remember the name.

That is the remembering technique by repetition.

So, there are ‘remembering by impact’ and ‘remembering by repetition’

The violin technique is the same of these two.

Some techniques are one day observed by a shock…

Like the technique of springing or Staccato, this kind of special technique comes to you suddenly one day. Then you’ll never forget it.

9/52…………………..11/22

You can not lose it. You don’t forget it.

But there is ‘some technique’ you may lose it.

Intonation and you don’t remember a concerto which you did 10 years ago.

Music…. You have to re-learn it. Learn it again and again.

This is God’s law.

If you fast for 3 days, you lose a lot of your weight.

And the world is not your concern but only the food.

Oh, I can’t eat this tasteful food now. But I did 3 days fasting for 4 times.

For first 3 times, I only had the thoughts of food

but the last one out of 12th days, on the 3rd day of the 3rd time, I did not think the food at all.

Instead of food, I had an idea.

A technique idea that was not my idea but that was from God. I was quite sure that this idea came from Him

Who brought the music? Is there one?

Take it out please

You may complain “What is going on here…this doesn’t make sense”

But look, including those 35. There are few extra pages you may find.

11/22…………………13/01

Look it up there.

Which page is it? They made the copies.

In there, you may find ‘Krazy’…instead of ‘Crazy’

Krazy Nuclear Exercise, you may find it.

Anyway, you may find the extra pages except the 35 pages.

If you see it, really it’s the last two pages

It was an idea that I just wrote on that day

Why Crazy? Why nuclear?

Scientifically, I can’t express it right in Korean words but I wrote it because it was an exercise

that was quite impossible even though I believed it was quite possible.

You may think that I would be able to do it, that exercise because I already have shown you my demonstration before.

I also showed you with viola so there is no complaint that it is the size of the hand. This is no other way out.

Right?

13/01……………….14/28

I have shown you with a small instrument, too. So it’s not necessary because I showed you with a 1/4 size violin.

So, what is it? In fact, you said even the string overtone with scientific division is too hard to understand.

‘X box’ is the Money, the world’s richest person Bill Gates’ most precious item.

‘X box’ with huge amount of investment did not quite make it US.

Why? Because my son does not want it

That means his friends did not have it either

As a parent, it is our situation to look what is going on with his generation.

That is the reality, too.

So, if you say, “Dr. Bai’s ‘X box’ is so difficult to do, so it would not make it,” I would not think so.

Just the name is there. The rectangular, a regular square shape is the main point of my ‘X box’ simply.

I explained to you yesterday about this fingerboard that the distance between 1st string to 4th string and from here to here at the bridge

… and what is the division?

Again, let’s review. This as I said before,

14/29………….16/50

Remembering technique can be by impact or by repetition. These two

This can be measured. Look again.

If you are not sure, please use the ruler but now measure from E to G string and just bring that much to the bridge.

Isn’t it right on the half between A and G?

It means ‘twice’ as much.

The violin was made very scientifically by the people a long time ago.

Once I went Paris to visit the Cathedral Nortre-Dame. It was destroyed almost half during the World War 2.

Inside, there are two huge round circle shaped windows.

They are mosaic with the picture of 12 disciples inlaid.

They are like twins but one is the original and one is a fake.

One is destroyed and re-built and the other one is made in 1400’s, about 600 years ago.

The original is in round circle shape like a chariot.

You know what kind of shape?

So, there are many thin lines made by stones, the stones.

The Cathedral Nortre-Dame was made out of stones.

Inside, the mosaic was made that way and these days, people can’t find out how that was made at all.

So, they had to make a fake one. They had to put the iron sticks inside of the thin lines.

But If you see it, people make good copies. You can’t tell which is which.

I couldn’t tell but the travel guide told us which was which.

Nowadays, people can’t make a violin like this violin.

This violin is older than United States of America.

This was made in 1698.

We can’t find the secret.

More then a secret, they knew the ‘know how’ and they had the wisdom.

100 years ago, they were culturally much better. Wrote better literature, better music.

You saw Heifetz yesterday.

16/50…………….18/01

Art, painting, including every field, nowadays people are much weaker.

All are proud of the computer but I’ll tell you a story

A few years ago, the late president Ronald Reagan passed away.

When he was the governor of California, there were some ‘hippie’ students with no interest in studying occupied the Dean’s office

So, the Governor Reagan was asked to persuade the students.

When he came, the student’s behavior was so bad that they put their legs up on the desk and stuff.

Even in a US society, that’s not acceptable.

The students fingered and pointed at him and said,

“What do you know? We know everything, even computer.” Then the Governor said,

“Well, you’re right. We made it”

Did you get it?

“Our old generation made the computer for the younger generation.”

18/01………………………….

That’s really amazing story in English.

He said, “ I know. We made it.”

So, we play that kind of performance. With old instruments which we really have to appreciate it.

Paganini composed. Mozart composed.

We have to study them with a lot of appreciations.

But now there are no more composers like them.

Heifetz composed very well and arranged a lot as well but no one played that piece.

Heifetz did the composition and he performed as well. So who would challenge him?

So, the business was no good. It failed.

Me, too. If 35 exercises were published nicely, it wouldn’t sell, not even 1.

Oh, here’s one.

Crazy. No one.

99.99 % pure gold is expensive because it is a pure gold. No one will buy it.

But somebody will buy it.

Somebody, right?

So, I gave you free like Jesus gave us free.

Yesterday, until 2:30 in the morning, Kum jong has studied with me.

He studied with me for 7-8 years since he was in junior high.

Surprisingly, he came to me when I was quite busy in Korea at that time.

He would get so nervous while coming to my apartment.

So I did not give him like this kind of exercise at the beginning.

He wasn’t as advanced but he did what he had to do and he believed in me and had sustained our relationship until now.

I wonder where many of my former students are.

He is the only one sustained.

That is very strange.

So Dr. Bai is not popular and he’s not worth it?

I don’t believe that. I was not truthful to my former students. Do you think so?

Yesterday, we talked about the movie, ‘Passion of Christ’.

I havn’t seen it yet but I want to

#3 …………….Scale

5도 Fingering의 중요성
Scale Practice and Application
About Well Tempered Scale
(Understanding of Use of Chromatic Scale)

1………………1/46

You have to take care of the basic if you want to study it deeply.

All the deep studies need to solve the fundamental basics.

We took care of the cleaning.

So, then, what is next?

The tuning, right?

How did the world’s best player, Heifetz did the tuning? What way?

Like this?

Tuned this way?

Remember?

He turned around because of the audience.
Tuning like this is only possible for a Genius

Is it possible? Like this small sound

He did it yesterday. Didn’t he?

During the performance, from time to time, he tuned with very little touch.

Heifetz is the only person I ever saw.

In the middle of the performance if you noticed or not.

I know because I saw it many times. The G string went down about a half tone.

Did you feel that?

G string went down during the performance.

That is the last note of the ending part. A flat and the open G. A flat.

Usually a talented player would sacrifice the open G string while adjusting the other notes corrected….

1/46…………………..4/05

But he did not.

Without people noticing, we would adjust the other notes little by little.

So the open G string would balance out with A flat.

I found out that he did that for the audience.

Very amazing. I felt his delicate mind.

So, many of you have seen his level of performance for the first time,

Like when we read bible to get the Holy spirit, we have to read it many times to understand the true God’s words.

You can get the video.

If you search the internet, you may order it and you would get it in one month. These days it comes in DVD.

Watch that constantly, repeat and repeat.

Kum Jong watched it more then 50 times but he said he still has found new things. Please keep studying.

Fortunately, we are blessed. Heifetz left us this precious material.

Paganini did not leave us this kind but his music remained.

I stop here the Paganini but you would say, “Dr.Bai, Paganini is too hard for us.”

I found out the true way of tuning.

Not too loud but as much as you can hear it. Very little.

Small sound tuning is the most common way of having soft sound.

Now for the little children, it’s easier to use the tuner but I started to tune since I was 3rd grader in Elementary school.

I tried to copy the adult so I used the pegs to tune.

Do you know when you tune, you have to twist inward with the pegs like a screw?

That is a common sense. By the way, sometimes you tend to do that too much when it is so wet and moist, it gets very tight.

It is better to do it just a little bit as much as it holds.

But still many of you, like a habit screw in it so hard so it can’t move.

4/05………………………..5/31

But in fact, this is the reason that it gets out of tune…

Why does it get out of tune?

The string gets loose.

So, this has to twist and turn to make the peg move this way.

So, it’s not this one’s fault.

The string is loosen. This does not need to be tightened too much. This does not get loose easily.

OK?

So, at first tune, while you do the scale, you might say, “Oh, teacher. no more scale. We have every scale in the music.”

“10th what? It is not necessary. It comes once out of 100.
That’s nothing. I rather be out of tune.”

“Staccato? Why suffer. It does not come often.”

But if you are ready, you will always appreciate that you are ready on that part.

This scale’s basic fundamental idea is a ‘half step’ which all come together exception of the modern music.

Half tones get together to make the whole tone and whole tones get together for 3rd and 4th

Like this. You may complain again, “ no more theories” but dots get together to make a picture.

Dots get together to make a thing. Dots get together to make a buiding.

Piece after piece, that is the point.

Intonation. Every intonation is a “half tone”.

You have to know that

5/31………………….9/36

You may think that the notes are simply put together but it’s not the case.

Every note is made out of half tones and they make the music.

The dots get together to make a line, the lines get together to make a side,

the sides get together to make a solid body, the solid bodies get together to make a building, just like this.

Let’s start the half tone which is a dot.

Then do we just start from anywhere?

That is your choice.

It’s OK to start from E string or G string. By the way, how do we start the half tone? Just move. You can do it.

Here we have little children who are at Homman book 1 and Suzuki book 1. I will do it at their level.

Let’s practice the half tone today. Take up the violin.

First let’s tune and we will start the ‘half tone’ practice.

Simple half tone practice…

A is little flat…

Let’s start the open string.

What is the next note after the open string? In G string, it is A flat or G sharp, right?

I will think it as a ‘well tempered’.

Try it.

It’s like the movie, ‘The Jaws’. A shark is coming.

This is ok. Our little ones can do it too.

Just try it and then I will propose something.

Think of this A flat as the lowest A flat.

The open G string is right next to A flat. Try it even more lower then before like this. Try it very low.

OK….Remember that A flat

This A flat is now compared to a regular A flat.

Try it.

Do you feel the difference?

A lot?

So, if the half tone scale is upward, it has to be higher and if it is downward, it has to be really lower.

So, it is melodic half tone scale.

But if this is a harmony or a chord, you have to do it with ‘Well Tempered’ way.

9/36…………………..10/43

For example, put the 3rd finger down on D string with the 3rd.

Perfectly with the 3rd down.

Compare it.

OK?

Keep this G and use the 4th finger as we did the A flat….really closer.

As much as you can…closer….do the A flat.

Really closer as much as possible.

OK?

Remember?

You remember that at least for 1 minute.

OK…Please don’t take off this 3rd….the perfect 3rd.

Don’t take it off…keep it firm.

And then, pull this sound.

Do it like this.

OK…Confirmed? Don’t take it off.

10/43……………………………..11/48

Now, let’s put the A flat, the same one we did. The A flat from A.

This is showing a bad example which is really out of tune.

Like this way. Try it.

OK. The intonation is strange. Does it sound like G sharp?

This sounds like ‘out of tune’. Doesn’t it?

Then this time, let’s try the G sharp with the regular A.

Try the G sharp with upward tone which sounds good.

11/48…………………………….13/39

OK? Is it the nice G sharp with pleasant tone?

Don’t take it off yet. Just leave it.

Then let’s prove it that the G sharp and the A flat the one before are not the same tone.

This 4th finger is still here and let’s imagine that it is the A flat.

Sound strange? Try it.

How is it? The G sharp and A flat can’t be the same.

We have proved that.

Understand?

Do you think this is hard?

Look, G, G sharp, A….like this way

This has to sound pleasant like this.

A…A flat…G….this has to be downward and you can’t take the G. Never, in fact.

The first one, really low. Like this way. A flat is really toward G as a support actor.

Even much more….

It has be really close each other to get the A flat effect.

13/39…………………………..15/28

Please get up if you didn’t get it.

Finally, it is successful. Understand? Right?

So, we go to a lesson and the teachers would tell you this kind of indication such as “Fix the intonation. It’s sharp, it’s flat.”

This is the part to fix the intonation for wishing it sharper or flatter.

And there is a part that we have to always make it perfect and be perfect.

This is the part.

E A D G. This intonation has to be perfect no matter what.

For example, this E comes 10 times at a page of a piece, then that E could be somewhat different?

No

If one page has the ‘A’ 20 times, that 20 times can’t be all open strings.

It means the ‘A’ can be in any octave ranges like one or two octaves up.

The ‘A’ of 20 times must be unchangeable tone.

Never change the tone.

So, Heifetz had the amazing perfect intonation because he always did make sure of the open string and found the perfect tone from the open string.

15/28……………………………..17/25

So, yesterday, I showed you the overtone stuff here and it sounded many open sounds.

Were there many harmonic sounds?

This way had a lot of harmonic sounds too.

So, I told you on the 1st day that the high position which you shouldn’t be afraid of, is rather easier to do because it is closer.

The feeling of really delicate little move of the finger tip is very important for your concentration which you have to control.

Then think of it this way.

Most of you have the full size, but now, let’s think of it as if it is the 1/2 size violin.

So, the ‘A’, it is not here but here. Let’s put the finger down.

Let’s think the 1/2 size violin starts about here…I am sure…but…

OK. Today, we won’t do that hard.

Here. Let’s put the half tone.

B flat is downward so you must put really close.

OK. Don’t take it off.

Yesterday, I showed you the glissando. Pull it down.

And then, do it this way. B flat.

17/25………………………………19/56

How is it? Comfortable?

Do you know why it’s comfortable?

It is less closer.

Here it is really close to each other…

That’s why it makes you pleased with A flat with so close A flat.

“Oh…I am alive”, that kind of feeling. Do you feel that?

Now let’s repeat that.

Repeat this way.

This kind of idea is yours.

This is improvised one of my own.

It did not come with a lot of agony or worries…but improvised.

When you meet somebody, “Hey, long time no see. Let’s go some place to talk.”

Then, would this kind of talk be pre-planned?

In fact, Bach and Mozart composed pieces with the performance itself.

People compose for the sake of promises on the stage.

The cadenza means that they improvise a lot.

The greatest composers are usually jazz and gypsy musicians.

Therefore, people say they are not classical but most of the music began from these countrymen.

In New Orleans, the black people started to play jazz music.

Also, gypsies started to participate in the church choir which became classical music.

Gypsies made the violin.

19/56…………………21/08

You didn’t know that, right? Who saw the “Red Violin,” the movie?

Everyone saw it? How does it come out?

The violin was stolen by the gypsy when a child was dead and buried.

Then Paganini saw the violin and he was amazed by the violin’s sound.

He practically took it from the gypsy.

Now we have to realize that the violin is meant to be played outside like the gypsies.

Because of rain or something, people took it inside of the room which became the chamber music but the instrument is truly meant to perform outside.

You said, “please, don’t play on the street” so I won’t do it during the camp but someday I will play on the street.

Really, the freedom of the gypsies is to travel freely although they are outlaws sometimes, but the music is so natural.

We enjoy listening to the Ziguenerweizen. Do you know?

It is called the Gypsy’s Aria.

21/08………………………………………….25/05

When we pray together, the priest is the loudest.

So you are so protected from your neighbor. It’s OK.

“Oh, we have a big problem. My son has failed the exam.” It’s OK to pray like this.

I did this. I told you on the 1st day, there are 4 octaves in one string.

I practiced this way. Understand?

Now, as you can see there are 4 octaves coming up and down.

It is not impossible to do.

Usually people say it is not quite sounding because of the rosin on the string and they complain it, but that’s why I clean it

If you want to try this for fun, please go ahead.

I give you 3 minutes.

OK.

25/05………………………..26/31

I didn’t mean to practice by myself.

So, in fact, I have developed this exercise right before I came to the camp.

I wrote on the web board that I would show you this. I wonder who saw it.

I was sure that God gave me this idea so I practiced this a lot.

Before I departed from Korea about 10 days ago, this idea just came to me one day.

So I made a quiz and wrote 1234 on the string cutting in half.

Then, Mr.Kim said, “It is harmonics”.

But when I came here, I said, “Oh, no, that’s not it. It’s a fingering.”

Then he said, “How can it be a fingering?” But it is real, isn’t it?

This is an amazing exercise.

That’s why as I told you before that it would be so great to practice this including the half tones.

It comes at the end of the Cadenza of the 1st movement, Tchaikovski concerto….

Right?

But, all of them are written in half tones, octaves up and down.
Right?

This can be an useful variation and this exercise is really a lot of help.

So, I tell you the use of half tone is a melodic effect

and it can be ‘a support actor’ who plays the important role for the main character.

Then, you say, “Is there a half tone effect if it is a harmonics?

26/31………………………27/40

The half tones get together to make a harmonic, right?

That’s easy to explain the 3rd, 6th when the children are confused.
It can be called the ‘brick’.

A brick is a half tone.

Two bricks are whole tone. 3 bricks are the minor 3rd.

Do you understand this concept?

So, I’ll tell you with numbers.

1 is half tone, 2 is whole tone, 3 is minor 3rd…

4 is Major 3rd but it can be confusing. So let’s say 3.5 is the Major 3rd

4 is perfect 4th, 4.5 is tritone.

5 is perfect 5th, then next, 6 is minor 6th,

6.5 is Major 6, 7 is minor 7th, 7.5 is Major 7th

Then next 8 which is octave.

In fact, this is not my idea, but it’s a technique used in music theory.

That is because, since people don’t understand that easily, they use the example of a brick building.

27/40………………………………..30/01

So, what do you think of the most easiest brick? 1 is 1…1, right?

Then next easy brick is now two half tones. This is the whole tone.

Now I will explain to you there are two cases of half tones.

Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si, Do. There are ‘Mi, Fa…Si, Do’

To little children. Where are they? “mi,fa,…si,do”?

They are just in the middle and the end. Let’s try with A or C.

Let’s use C. Let’s try all.

I will give you a tip.

Place the finger with the 5th.

Keep the two strings with the finger. OK.

Where is the ‘mi, fa’ and where is the ‘si,do’?

With fingering

Isn’t it 3,4 and 3,4?…. 3,4 and 3,4

Try it, now.

With the 1st finger down. The 1st finger down.

OK. It sounds like a little children’s song.

Then, “Oh, Where am I? Excluded?

Which finger is excluded? What? Yes, the longest finger is excluded.

“Oh, I am the strongest one and you ignore me?” OK.

You are included. Let’s try it included.

Please try it.

With the 1st finger down as perfect 5th with the 1st finger down.

Please put the 1st finger down as 5th with the finger down.

30/01…………………………32/35

OK. The first finger must be down. As a promise but you keep taking off.

That is so unnecessary if you take it off.

With the finger down. Didn’t I tell you? Very close to each other?

Now let’s play it like this with the one who complained that he did get excluded.

How is it? Isn’t it easy?

Who thinks it’s hard?

Who thinks their fingers are too close together so their finger can’t move?

How is it now?

The fingers are moving fast, right? There is an effect from it, right?

Do you think so, the Pusan sisters?

The fingers are really moving fast.

Ultimately, I will show you over here with same principle.

Here hold it with the 1st finger, the 1st finger. With the 1st finger.

OK…

It sounds like a harmonics, right?

Sounds like a harmonics.

Heifetz loved to use the harmonics.

By the way, you have to press it down hard… so, the note will com out.

Press it down hard

OK. Now, it was the C Major before and it became A Major now.

In A Major, where is the ‘mi, fa, si, do’?

Find the ‘si,do’….like the 3rd 4th.

Find it with the 1st finger down.

OK?

“This guy is excluding me again. How dare. Excluding me again.
I want in”

“OK, poor guy…we include you again.”

Try it.

Try the scale with the one ‘excluded’.

Press it with the 1st finger…Don’t take it off.

32/35………………………………34/21

Here…in the Tchaikovsky…this part is hard, right?

But if you put down this one, it is very clean.

Understand?

Put this down…

The reason that fingers moves so fast is? What is it?

It’s the use of the physic law.

What kind of physic?

We use the column…the 1st base column is the 5th higher…I told you before.

Set it on 5 steps above…perfect 5th as being the both column, with ‘mi,fa, si,do’.

And make a simple scale with the ‘excluded’ finger, 2nd finger, which is now included.

This principle looks like a kindergarten level, but if this is not included, intonation would be uncertain.

If this is not included, it’s not possible for perfect performance.

If this is not included, it’s not possible to play Paganini.
.
If this is not included, it’s not possible to play in tune.

This is a very basic information, and 10 out of 10,
when they do scales, they don’t put 5th down.

If there are 100 people, 99 don’t.

The one who does, we call him a virtuoso.

Yes, do you understand?

Most of the violinists don’t act on this principle but 1 out of 100, that person is the master.

34/21………………………..35/46

In fact, 1 out of 100 is too many, maybe 10,000.

No, Heifetz is at least, one out of few 100,000 or more like me.

If one out of a few 1000,000, is that too much?

In our violin history, most of the violinists did not do this principle.

But Heifetz and very few other masters did make the perfect 5th for the perfect intonation.

Mr. Kim who was one of the Heifetz students, teaches students with
the perfect 5th exercise a lot.

Even with the ‘twinkle twinkle little star’.

Let’s do that…OK?

‘twinkle twinkle little star’ with perfect 5th.

You children,too. OK?

We just use the open strings…

35/46……………….38/02

Now let’s change the key…change the key…

Including the 4th finger…the 4th finger.

Do the 4th finger with 5th

Change the key

Let’s go up to the top like this.

Yes, I gave you one example like this one…the perfect 5th’ effect.

When it becomes easy, one might ask me,

“Dr. Bai, what about the viola player?”
I did the same thing with the viola.

It looks like the finger may fall in between, but what about the guitar players?

They do it this and this way, right?

The guitar players, they all have the same thick callus on their fingers.

Why? They do the 5th this way.

In fact, we can do the same from the 1st string to the 4th string like this way.

It’s the ‘X box’, isn’t it?

The side ones in the ‘X box’ are all 5th.

Do you want to try it? For fun

Now you know it, right?

So, one would say, “If the 4th finger is short and thin, how do you do it?”

Still, you do it as the guitarist like this. Try it.

How? The 4th finger is like this, right?

All the guitarists do it this way, right?

After all, is it possible or impossible?

Is it possible or impossible to put the perfect 5th?

It is possible, right? Even the 4th finger is possible to put here covering.

Isn’t it possible to cover all the 4 strings with the 4th finger, or not?

Who thinks it is too short?

Who thinks the finger is this short?

From here to here, if the 4th finger is this long,
then just use all the area

Right? Not impossible, right? It covers it all.

So, Do the column set up with the 5th as the base principle, as the column.

It gives you the big foundation.

And what is ‘mi,fa, si,do’?

The half tone has to be closer and up with upward, down with downward.

This is one of the main basic principle.

39/28………………………

I gave you 1 idea for you to make 10 ideas….

Oh, now the time is up. I will continue.

Anyway,…you may find the extra pages except the 35 pages.

If you see it…really……(it’s the last two pages.)

It was an idea that I just wrote….on that day…

Why Crazy? Why nuclear? Scientifically…….I can’t express it right in Korean words but it means, I wrote it because it was an exercise that was quite impossible eventhough I believed it was quite possible.

You may think that I would be able to do it… that exercise… because I already have showed you my demonstration before.

I also showed you with viola….so, there is no complaint that it is the size of the hands….This is no other way out.

Right?

13/01……………….14/28

I have showed you with a small instrument, too…so, it is not necessary…because I showed you with 1/4 size violin.

So, what is it? In fact, you said even “the string overtone with scientific division is too hard to understand”.

‘X box’……is…Money….the world richest person, Bill Gates’s the most precious item. ‘X box’….with huge amount of investment…did not quite made it US.

Why? Because my son does not want it….^^

That means his friends did not have it either…
As a parent, it is our situation to look what is going on with his generation.

That is the reality…too.

So, if you say, “Dr. Bai’s ‘X box’ is so difficult to do, so it would not make it”…I would not think so.

Just the name is there… the rectangular, a regular square shape is the main point of my ‘X box’….simply.

I explained to you yesterday about this fingerboard that the distant between 1st string to 4th string and from here to here at the bridge… and what is the division?

Again…let’s review………..so, this I said before…

14/29………….16/50

Remembering technique can be by impact or by repetition…..these two…

This can be measured…Look again…...If you are not sure, please use the ruler…but now measure from E to G string…and just bring that much to the bridge.

Isn’t it right on the half between A and G?

It means ‘twice’ as much.

The violin was made very scientifically by the people a long time ago.

Once I went Paris to visit the Cathedral Nortre-Dame… it was destroyed almost half during the World War 2.
Inside, there are two huge round circle shape windows.

They are mosaic with 12 disciples and they are inlaid.

They are like twins…but one is the original and one is a fake.

One is destroyed and re-built and one is made in 1400’s…about 600 years ago.

The original is in round circle shape like a chariot.

You know what kind of shape?

So, there are many thin lines made by stones…the stones…

The Cathedral Nortre-Dame was made out of stones.

Inside, the mosaic was made that way…and these days, people can’t find out how that was made….at all.

So, they had to make a fake one…they had to put the iron sticks inside of the thin lines.

But If you see it….people do good copies….You can’t tell which is which.

I couldn’t tell… but the travel guide told us which was which.

Nowadays people can’t make a violin like this violin.

This violin is older than United States of America.

This was made in 1698.

We can’t find the secret.

More then a secret, they knew the ‘know how’ and they had the wisdom.

Look even…100 years ago….they were culturally much better…wrote better literature, better music,….You saw Heifetz yesterday.

16/50…………….18/01

Art, painting, including every field, nowadays people are much weaker.

I are proud of the computer..but ….I tell you a story…

Few years ago, late president Ronald Reagan passed way…..when he was the governor of California, there were some ‘hippie’ students with no interest of studying…occupied the Dean’s office of the university…

So, the Governor Reagan was asked to persuade the students….
but when he came…the student’s behavior was so bad…their legs on the desk and stuff.

Even in US society…that’s not acceptable.

And then, they fingered and pointed at him…. “What do you know? We know everything…even computer…”…so, the Governor said,

“Well, you are right…we made it”

Did you get it?

“Our old generation made the computer for younger generation.”

18/01………………………….

That’s really amazing story…in English….

“I know…we made it”…
He said, “ I know….we made it.”

So, we play that kind of performance…with old instruments which we really have to appreciate it.

Paganini did composed….Mozart did composed……
We have to study them with a lot of appreciations.

But now there are no more composers like them.

Heifetz composed very well and arranged a lot as well….but no one played that piece.

Heifetz did the composition and he performed as well….so, who would challenge him?

So, the business was no good….failed….
Me too…if 35 exercises were published nicely, it wouldn’t sell, not even 1.

Oh…here is one.

Crazy….no one.

But, there is 99.99 % worth gold is………expensive, because it is Gold…no one buys….

But somebody will buy it.

Somebody…right?

So, I gave you free.......like Jesus gave us free.

Yesterday, until 2:30 in the morning,…. Kum jong….he has studied with me for 7-8 years….since he was junior high.

Surprise….he came to me when I was quite busy in Korea at that time…he would get so nervous while coming to my apartment.

Hh…so, I did not give him like this kind of exercise at the beginning.

He wasn’t as advanced….but he did what he had to do and he believed in me and had sustained our relationship until now.

I wonder where the so many my former students are.

He is the only one sustained.

That is very strange.

So, Dr. Bai has no popularity and he is not worth?

I don’t believe that…. I was not truthful to my former students….Do you?

You are…….. so,…
yesterday we talked about the movie… ‘passion of Christ’
I havn’t seen it yet but I want to…

#3 …………….Scale
Scale Practice and Application
About Well Tempered Scale
(Understanding of Use of Chromatic Scale)

1………………1/46
You have to take care of the basic if you want to study it deeply.

All the deep studies need to solve the fundamental basics.

We took care of the cleaning.

So, then, What is next?

The tuning ….right?

How was the world best player… Heifetz tuning… what way?

Like this?

Tuned this way?

Remember?

He turned around because of the audience…
Tuning like this is only possible for a Genius…

Is it possible? Like this small sound…

He did…yesterday….Didn’t he?

During the performance, time to time, he tuned with very little touch …..Heifetz is the only person I ever saw.

And in the middle of that…….If you noticed or not……..I know because I saw it many times…
The G string went down about a half tone.

Did you feel that?

G string went down during the performance.

That is the last note of the ending part….A flat…and the open G….A flat.

Usually a talented player would sacrifice the open G string while adjusting the other notes corrected….

1/46…………………..4/05

But he did not.
Without people noticing, we would adjust the other notes little by little, so, the open G string would balance out with A flat.

I found out…that he did that for the audience.

So amazing….really… I felt his delicate mind.

So, many of you have seen his level of performance for the first time,
Like when we read bible to get the Holy spirit, we have to read it many times to understand the true God’s words….
You can get the video…
If you search the internet…you may order it and you would get it in one month…..These days it comes with DVD.

Watch that constantly…repeat…and repeat….
Kum Jong watched it for more then 50 times…but still he said he has found new things…Please keep studying.

Fortunately, we are blessed….Heifetz left us this precious material…

Paganini did not leave us this kind…but his music remained.
I stop here the Paganini….but…you would say, “Dr.Bai,…Paganini is too hard for us….”

I found out the true way of tuning.

Not to loud…but as much as you can hear it….very little…

Small sound tuning …is the most common way of having soft sound.

Now for little children…it is easier to use the tuner….but I started to tune since I was 3rd grader in Elementary school.

I tried to copy the adult…so, I used the pegs to tune.

Do you know when you tune, you have to twist inward with the pegs like a screw?

That is a common sense….by the way…sometimes you tend to do that too much when it is so wet and moist…it gets so tight.
So, it is better to do it just little bit as much as it holds.

But still many of you, like a habit… ‘screw in it so hard, do not move…’

4/05………………………..5/31

But in fact, this is the reason that it gets out of tune…

Why does it get out of tune?

The string gets loose…

So, this has to twist and turn to make the peg move this way.
So, it’s not this one’s fault.

The string is loosen….so, this does not need to be tightened too much. This does not get loose easily.

OK?

So, first tune, while you do the scale….Oh…teacher….No more scale….we have every scale in the music…you may say…
“10th….what? it is not necessary….it comes once out of 100…
That’s nothing…I rather be out of tune…”

“Staccato? Why suffer….it does not come often…”….but,
if you are ready, you will always appreciate that you are ready that part.

This scale’s basic fundamental idea is ‘half step’….which all become together …..exception of the modern music…..half tones get together to make the whole tone….and whole tones get together for 3rd and 4th…..

Like this….you may complain again “ no more theory..”…but dots get together to make a picture….dots get together to make a thing….dots get together to make a buiding.

가루..가루…
Piece after piece…that is the point….

Intonation…..every intonation is “half tone”.

You have to know that…

5/31………………….9/36

You may think that the notes are simply put together…but it is not the case…every note is made out of half tones and they make the music.

The dots get together to make a line, the lines get together to make a side, the sides get together to make a solid body, the solid bodies get together to make a building…just like this…

Let’s start the half tone which is a dot.

Then do we just start anywhere?

That is your choice.

It’s OK to start from E string or G string. By the way, how do we start the half tone?.... Just move….You can do it.

Here we have a little children who are at Homman book 1 and Suzuki book 1….I will do it at their level.

Let’s practice the half tone today….. take up the violin.

First let’s tune…and we will start the ‘half tone’ practice.

Simple half tone practice…

A가 너무 낮나요….
A is little flat…

Let’s start the open string.

What is the next note after the open string? In G string, it is A flat or G sharp….right?

I will think it as a ‘well tempered’.

Try it…

It is like the movie…. ‘The Jaws’…..a shark…is coming…

This is ok…our little ones can do it too…

Just try it….and then…I will propose something…

Think….of this A flat …..as the lowest A flat.

The open G string is right next to A flat…. try it even more lower then before….like this….try it….very low….

OK….Remember that A flat…

This A flat is now compared to a regular A flat.

Try it.

Do you feel the difference?

A lot?

So, if the half tone scale is upward, it has to be higher…and if it is downward, it has to be really lower.

So, it is melodic half tone scale.

But if this is a harmony or a chord, you have to do it with ‘Well Tempered’ way.

9/36…………………..10/43

For example, put the 3rd finger down on D string…with the 3rd.

Perfectly with the 3rd …down.

Compare it.

OK?

Keep this G……and use the 4th finger as we did the A flat….really closer….As much as you can…closer….do the A flat.

Now, let’s put the A flat…the same one we did…the A flat from A.

This is showing a bad example which is really out of tune.

Like this way………..Try it.

OK…..the intonation is strange…..is it sound like G sharp?

This sounds like ‘out of tune’…isn’t it?

Then this time, let’s try the G sharp with the regular A.

Try the G sharp with upward tone which sounds good.

11/48…………………………….13/39

OK? Is it the nice G sharp with pleasant tone?

Don’t take it off yet….just leave it.

Then let’s prove it that… the G sharp and the A flat the one before, they are not the same tone.

This 4th finger is still here…and let’s imagine that it is the A flat.

Sound strange? Try it…

How is it? The G sharp and A flat can’t be the same…

We have proved that.

Understand?

Do you think this is hard?

Look, G, G sharp, A….like this way…

This has to sound pleasant… like this….

A…A flat…G….this has to be downward and you can’t take the G…never… in fact,

The first one…really low….like this way…A flat is really toward G as a support actor.

Even much more….

It has be really close each other to get the A flat effect.

13/39…………………………..15/28

Please get up who didn’t get it.

Finally, it is successful…. Understand? Right?

So, we go to a lesson and the teachers would tell you this kind of indication such as “Fix the intonation…It’s sharp… it’s flat.”

This is the part to fix the intonation for wishing it sharper or flatter…
And there is a part that we have to always make it perfect and be perfect.

This is the part……(Mi La Re Sol)

E A D G ….this intonation has to be perfect no matter what.

For example, this E comes 10 times at a page of a piece…then, that E could be somewhat different?

No…

One page has the A for 20 times…that 20 times can’t be all open strings….it means the A can be in any octave ranges like one or two octaves up…the A of 20 times must be unchangeable tone.

Never change the tone.

So, Heifetz had the amazing perfect intonation because he always did make sure of the open string and found the perfect tone from the open string.

15/28……………………………..17/25

So, yesterday, I showed you the overtone stuff here and it sounded many open sounds…Were there many harmonic sounds?

This way had a lot of harmonic sounds too.

So, I told you on the 1st day that …the high position which you shouldn’t be afraid of, is rather easier to do, … because it is closer.

The feeling of really delicate little move of the finger tip….is very important for your concentration which you have to control.

Then think of it this way.

Most of you have the full size, but now, let’s think of it as if it is the 1/2 size violin.

So, the A… it is not here….but here….and let’s put the finger down.

Let’s think the 1/2 size violin starts about here…I am sure…but…

OK…..today we don’t do that hard.

Here…let’s put the half tone.

B flat is downward…so, you must put really close.

OK…Don’t take it off.

Yesterday, I showed you the glissando….pull it down.

And then… Do it this way….B flat.

17/25………………………………19/56

How is it? Comfortable?

Do you know why it’s comfortable?

It is less closer.

Here it is really closed each other…

That’s why, it makes you pleased with A flat…with so closed A flat.

“Oh…I am alive”….that kind of feeling….Do you feel that?

Now let’s repeat that.

Repeat this way.

This kind of idea is yours.

This is improvised one of my own.

It did not come with a lot of agony or worries…but improvised.
When you meet somebody…. “Hey, long time no see…let’s go some place to talk…” Then, do you talk pre-planned?

In fact, Bach and Mozart composed pieces with the performance itself.

People compose for the sake of promises on the stage…
The cadenza means that they improvise a lot.

The greatest composers are usually jazz and gypsy musicians.

Therefore, people say they are not classical….but most of the music began from these countrymen.

In New Orleans, the black people started to play jazz music.
Also, Gypsies started to participate in the church choir which became classical music.

Gypsies made the violin.

19/56…………………21/08

You didn’t know that, right? Who saw the “Red Violin,” the movie.

Everyone saw it? How does it come out?

The violin was stolen by the gypsy when the child as dead and buried.
Then Paganini saw the violin and he was amazed by the violin’s sound…So, he practically took it from the gypsy.

Now we have to realize that the violin is meant to be played outside…like the gypsies.

Because of rain or something, people took it inside of the room…which became the chamber music….but the instrument is truly meant to perform outside.

You said, “please, don’t play on the street”….so, I won’t do it during the camp…but someday I will play on the street.

Really… the freedom of gypsy, is to travel freely although they are outlaws sometimes, but the music is so natural.

We enjoy listening the Ziguenerweizen…. Do you know?

It is called he Gypsy’s Area.

21/08………………………………………….25/05

When we pray together, like the priest is the loudest….
So, you are so protective from your neighbor…HaHa …it’s OK.

“Oh, we have a big problem….my son has failed the exam…”….It is OK to pray like this….

I did this…..Oh…I told you on the 1st day, there are 4 octaves in one string.

I practiced this way…. Understand?

Now, as you can see there are 4 octaves coming up and down.

It is not impossible to do.

Usually people say it is not quite sounding because of the rosin on the string and they complain it, but…that’s why I clean it

Who wants to try this for fun…Please go ahead.

I give you 3 minutes.

OK.

25/05………………………..26/31

You didn’t mean to practice by myself.

So, in fact, I have developed this exercise right before I came to the camp.

I wrote that I would show you on the web board…I wonder who saw it.
I was sure that God gave me this idea….so, I practiced this a lot.

Before I depart to Korea, about 10 days ago…one day, this idea just came to me. So, I made a quiz and wrote 1234 on the string cutting in half….then, Mr.Kim said, “It is harmonics”…..

But when I came here, I said, “Oh, no, that’s not it…It’s a fingering.”
Then he said, “How can it be a fingering?”….but it is real, isn’t it?

This is an amazing exercise. That’s why as I told you before that it would be so great to practice this including the half tones.

It comes at the end of the Cadenza of the 1st movement, Tchaikovski concerto….

Right?

But, all of them are written in half tones….octaves up and down.
Right?

This can be an useful variation and this exercise is really a lot of help.

So, I tell you the use of half tone is a melodic effect and it can be ‘a support actor’, who is the important role for the main character.
Then, you say, “Is there a half tone effect if it is a harmonics?

26/31………………………27/40

The half tones get together to make a harmonics….right?

That’s easy to explain the 3rd, 6th,….when the children are confused.
It can be called ‘brick’….

A brick is a half tone.

Two bricks are whole tone….3 bricks are the minor 3rd…Do you understand this concept?

So, I tell you with numbers.

1 is half tone, 2 is whole tone, 3 is minor 3rd…

4 is Major 3rd…but, it can be confusing…so, 3.5 is the Major 3rd…

4 is perfect 4th, 4.5 is tritone.

5 is perfect 5th, then next, 6 is minor 6th,

6.5 is Major 6, 7 is minor 7th, 7.5 is Major 7th…

Then next 8….which is octave. In fact, this is not my idea, but

It is a technique in music theory.

That is because, since people don’t understand that easily, they use it as a brick building.

27/40………………………………..30/01

So, what do you think of the most easiest brick? 1 is 1…1 right?

Then next easy brick is now..two half tones…this is the whole tone.
Now I will explain to you there are two cases of half tones.

Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si, Do…..there are ‘Mi, Fa…Si, Do’…
To little children….Where are they? “mi,fa,…si,do”?

They are just in the middle and the end…..so, let’s try…with A..or C.

Let’s use C….let’s try all….

I will give you a tip.

Place the finger with the 5th.

Keep the two strings with…the finger…….OK.

Where is the ‘mi, fa’ and where is the ‘si,do’?

With fingering…

Isn’t it 3,4 and 3,4?…. 3,4 and 3,4 …….Try it, now.

With the 1st finger down….the 1st finger down….

OK…Oh…it sounds like a little children’s song.

Then, “Oh, Where am I? excluded?

Which finger is excluded? What? Yes, the longest finger is excluded.

“Oh, I am the strongest one and you ignore me?”…So, OK….
You are included. Let’s try it included.

Please try it.

With the 1st finger down as perfect 5th…. with the 1st finger down.

Please put the 1st finger down as 5th….with the finger down.

30/01…………………………32/35

OK…the first finger must be down….as a promise…but you keep taking off…That is so unnecessary if you take it off.

With the finger down….Didn’t I tell you? Very close each other?

Now let’s play it like this with the one… who complained that he did get excluded.

How is it, isn’t it easy?

Who thinks it’s hard?

Who thinks their fingers are too close together so their finger can’t move?

How is it now?

The fingers are moving fast, right? There is an effect from it, right?

Do you think so, the Pusan sisters?

The fingers are really moving fast.

Ultimately, I will show you over here with same principle.

Here hold it with the 1st finger… the 1st finger…with the 1st finger…

OK…

It sounds like a harmonics, right?

Sounds like a harmonics.

Heifetz loved to use the harmonics…By the way, you have to press it down hard… so, the note will com out….

Press it down hard

OK…now, it was the C Major before….and it became A Major now.
In A Major…where is the ‘mi,fa, si, do’?

Find the ‘si,do’….like the 3rd 4th.

Find it…with the 1st finger down.

OK?

“This guy is excluding me again…How dare…Excluding me again.
I want in”… “OK, poor guy…we include you again.”
Try it…

Try the scale with the one ‘excluded’.

Press it with the 1st finger…Don’t take it off.

32/35………………………………34/21

Here…in the Tchaikovsky…this part is hard, right?
But if you put down this one, it is very clean.
……..understand?

If 100, 99 don’t. The one who does, we call him a virtuoso.

Yes, do you understand?

Most of the violin players don’t do this principle…but 1 out of 100, that person is the master.

34/21………………………..35/46

In fact, 1 out of 100 is too many…maybe 10,000.
No, Heifetz is at least, one out of few 100,000…or more…like me.
If one out of few 1000,000…is that too much? Ha ha…

In our violin history, most of the violin players did not do this principle.
But Heifetz and very few other masters did make the perfect 5th for the perfect intonation.
Mr. Kim who was one of the Heifetz students, teaches students with the perfect 5th exercise a lot. Even with the ‘twinkle twinkle little star’.

Let’s do that…OK?
‘twinkle twinkle little star’ with perfect 5th.

You too children, OK?

We just use the open strings…

35/46……………….38/02
Now let’s change the key…change the key…

Including the 4th finger…the 4th finger.

Do the 4th finger with 5th…

Change the key…

Let’s go up to the top like this.

Yes, I gave you one example like this one…the perfect 5th’ effect.
When it becomes easy, one might ask me,
“Dr. Bai, what about the viola player?”…
I did the same thing with the viola.

It looks like the finger may fall in between, but what about the guitar player? They do it this and this way, right?

The guitar players, they all have the same thick callus on their fingers.
Why? They do the 5th this way.

In fact, we can do the same from the 1st string to the 4th string…like this way…it’s the ‘X box’, isn’t it? The side ones in the ‘X box’ are all 5th.

Do you want to try it? For fun…

Now you know it, right?

So, one would say, “If the 4th finger is short and thin, how do you do it?”…still, you do it as the guitarist like this….Try it.

How? The 4th finger is like this, right?

All the guitarist do it this way, right?

After all, is it possible or impossible?

Is it possible or impossible to put the perfect 5th?

It is possible, right? Even the 4th finger is possible to put here covering.

Isn’t it possible to cover all the 4 strings with the 4th finger, or not?

Who thinks it is too short?

Who thinks the finger is this short?

From here to here, if the 4th finger is this long…then just use all the area….Ha ha…

Right? Not impossible, right? It covers it all.

So, Do the column set up with the 5th as the base principle…as the column…it gives you the big foundation.
And what is ‘mi,fa, si,do’?
The half tone has to be closer and up with upward, down with downward….this is one of the main basic principle.

39/28………………………

I gave you 1 idea ….for you to make 10 ideas….
Oh, now the time is up…I will continue….
